Soludo Begins Second Term Amid High Expectations in Anambra

In a moment marked by celebration and public enthusiasm, citizens of Anambra State gathered in large numbers to witness the swearing-in of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for a second term in office. He was inaugurated alongside his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, at the iconic Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.

The massive turnout reflected public approval of Soludo’s first-term performance, which delivered measurable progress across critical sectors.

Strong Gains in Education:

Education emerged as a major focus of the administration. Over 8,115 teachers were recruited to improve learning outcomes, while public education was made free, easing the burden on families. School enrollment rose by 18.7%, and the number of out-of-school children dropped significantly to 2.9%. The introduction of smart schools across the State is also modernizing the education system and preparing students for a digital future.

Healthcare Improvements and Outcomes:

In healthcare, the government upgraded five major hospitals and installed solar power in 326 primary health centres to ensure uninterrupted services. More than 1,000 healthcare professionals were employed to strengthen service delivery. Notably, free antenatal care helped achieve zero maternal mortality in public facilities. As a result, Anambra now ranks just behind Lagos in under-five child survival rates—an indicator of improved healthcare quality.

Massive Infrastructure Development:

Infrastructure development has been one of the most visible achievements of the administration. Over 739 kilometres of roads were constructed, with more than 420 kilometres already completed and commissioned. New flyovers and urban road networks have transformed traffic flow in key areas. The “Zero Pothole” initiative has also significantly improved road conditions across the State, enhancing mobility and economic activity.

Economic Growth and Investment Climate:

Anambra has risen to become the leading State in ease of doing business in Southern Nigeria. The government has actively promoted a business-friendly environment, encouraging investments in technology, trade, and small-scale industries. A growing tech ecosystem is positioning the State as an emerging innovation hub, while efforts are underway to unlock its rich tourism potential.

Youth Empowerment and Skills Development:

The administration’s “One Youth, Two Skills” programme has trained over 5,000 young entrepreneurs, with an additional 8,700 currently undergoing training. In the digital space, about 20,000 youths have been equipped with technology-related skills, preparing them for opportunities in the global digital economy.

Education-Focused Budgeting:

Soludo’s commitment to human capital development is further reflected in the 2025 budget, where 46.9% of total expenditure was allocated to education—one of the highest proportions in Nigeria.

Second-Term Agenda: Consolidation and Expansion:

As the governor begins his second term, the focus is expected to shift toward consolidating these achievements while launching more ambitious projects.

In infrastructure, plans include the development of three smart cities—Awka 2.0, Onitsha 2.0, and the Anambra Mixed-Used Industrial City. There are also proposals for a state-wide rail network and the duallisation of major Trunk A highways to improve connectivity.

In economic development, the government aims to expand tourism by developing key attractions such as the Ogbunike Caves, Owerre-Ezukala Waterfalls, and Agulu Lake into world-class eco-tourism destinations. Plans are also underway to establish a comprehensive oncology centre to improve cancer care within the State.

Looking Ahead:

With a renewed mandate, Governor Soludo’s second term is widely expected to deepen reforms, accelerate development, and position Anambra as a leading model of sustainable growth in Nigeria.
