Death is one mystery that is beyond human comprehension. Nobody knows when and how it will occur. It is a debt every human must pay someday. On April 24, 2025 at Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in memory of Late Engr. Lolo Sonja Nkechi Chukwumezie, friends and well-wishers from far and near will gather to mourn the loss of a shining star, the angel of our time, a beacon of hope, and a beautiful soul, Engr. Lolo Sonja Nkechi Chukwumezie (Nee Theuwissen) who left us far too soon.
Sonja, an Agric. Engineer and a Belgian married to Nze Kanayo Chukwumezie (Onwa) was indeed an angel of our time. Her marriage to Onwa was for love and compassion. Everybody was a dear friend to her. A staff of Japanese Embassy, Nigeria, she will be fondly remembered as a dear wife, mother, aunt, colleague and a friend.
According to burial arrangement released by the husband, her final journey began with a mass at St. Trudo’s Catholic Church Eksel followed by night of Tributes at Kruisboogvereging Eksel on February 23, 2025 in Belgium.
Late Engr. Lolo Sonja Nkechi Chukwumezie
In Abuja Nigeria, a similar mass was held in her honour on March 21 at Our Lady’s Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral Church, Area 3 Garki, Abuja followed by night of tribute at Soka Garden, Garki Abuja. At Mputu village, Ukpor Nnewi South LGA, the husband said there will be dedication of 2 boreholes donated in her memory on April 23, 2025 followed by wake keep in the evening at her husband’s compound at Mputu village. The following morning, her body leaves Gate of Heaven Mortuary Ukpor for lying in state at her husband’s compound, followed by burial mass at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Mputu, and internment.
Sonja lived a life of kindness and compassion. Her life was a testimony to the power of kindness, compassion, and generosity. She had a heart of gold, always willing to lend a listening ear, a helping hand, or a comforting word. Her smile could light up a room, and her laughter was contagious, spreading joy to all those around her.
She was a doctor to some people and encyclopedia to others. She combined these two to advise many sick people who got well or managed their sicknesses better. But unfortunately there was no opportunity for her to receive back such wonderful gesture. She may have died too soon but shall always be remembered through projects as to be started with the dedication of the 2 boreholes in Mputu Ukpor in her loving memory.

Her presence in our lives was a gift, a reminder of the beauty and goodness that exists in this world. She has a soul of beauty and light. Indeed, Sonja was an angel of our time. She was a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, a calm in every storm, and a safe haven for those seeking refuge. Her love, her light, and her legacy will continue to inspire us, even in her absence. We will remember Sonja’s infectious enthusiasm, her unwavering optimism, and her unshakeable faith. We will cherish the memories of her kindness, her understanding, and her generosity.
We will honor her memory by continuing to spread love, kindness, and compassion to all those around us.

As we say goodbye to our dear beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, colleague and niece, Engr Lolo Sonja Nkechi Chukwumezie, an angel of our time, we take comfort in the knowledge that her spirit will live on in our hearts. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love and light that she so generously shared with us during her time on this earth.
May God comfort the husband, Onwa, the son, Chuka and every member of the family and give all the fortitude to bear the loss, Amen.
Rest in peace, dear Engr Sonja, rest in peace, Nkechi, rest in peace Lolo Onwa. Your love, your light, and your legacy will never be forgotten.
