Corruption—the shadow that looms over national security, prosperity, and sovereignty. The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, sounded the alarm during the 2024 National Crimewatch Awards, urging Nigerians to stand united in rejecting corruption and criminal activities. His message was clear: corruption is the root of many societal problems and must be eliminated to pave the way for a stable and thriving Nigeria.
Corruption: A Threat to National Stability
In a press release delivered by Demola Bakare, fsi, Acting Director of Public Enlightenment and Education at ICPC, Dr. Aliyu stressed that corruption is more than just a crime—it is a direct threat to national security. “Corruption destabilizes the nation, weakens prosperity, and undermines sovereignty,” he warned, highlighting that a collective effort is needed to tackle this pervasive issue.
Receiving a lifetime achievement award for his relentless efforts in combating corruption, Dr. Aliyu, represented by ICPC Deputy Director Dr. Oluwasina Babasola, reiterated that under his leadership, ICPC has made remarkable strides within months. “The Commission has garnered respect and formed crucial partnerships across the country,” Dr. Babasola said, ensuring that the fight against corruption is being fought on all fronts.
ICPC’s Commitment to Change
Dr. Babasola affirmed the Commission’s commitment to reducing corruption, expressing deep gratitude for the recognition received at the awards. He made it clear that such accolades only strengthen ICPC’s resolve. “This acknowledgment serves as motivation to push even harder in our efforts,” he stated passionately.
The event’s convener, Mr. Tony Okpe, emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals and organizations making outstanding contributions to national security. He stated that these awards help spark important conversations on national safety and encourage the pursuit of a crime-free society.
The National Crimewatch Awards: Honoring Excellence
Mr. Okpe also explained that the awardees were selected based on feedback from independent assessments conducted by crime-beat journalists. Over its 21-year history, the National Crimewatch Awards has built a prestigious reputation for recognizing exceptional achievements in safeguarding Nigeria’s security.
Other notable awardees included Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Police Operations; Lt. Gen.
