A Grand Display of Unity and Cultural Revival
The Ihiala Progress Union (IPU) Women’s Wing, Lagos Branch, on Sunday held a colourful and highly spirited gathering to launch a major community development initiative—an ambitious ₦100 million fundraising drive for the renovation of the Ihiala Annex House in Lagos. The event, which drew community leaders, guests, women groups, and supporters across Lagos, celebrated both cultural identity and the collective strength of Ihiala women.

Held in an atmosphere filled with unity and purpose, the occasion featured a series of memorable highlights including the unveiling of the community’s new cultural dance troupe, proudly named “Di bu Ugwu”, and the presentation of awards of honour to distinguished Ihiala women who have contributed immensely to the growth and image of the community.
Preserving a Community Legacy
In her opening remarks, the President of the IPU Women’s Wing, Lolo Nneka Egbunonu, described the Ihiala Annex House as a historical pillar of community bonding and identity. She explained that the building, which has served the Ihiala community in Lagos for many years, now requires urgent renovation to restore its structural integrity and preserve its relevance for future generations.
According to her, the fundraising effort is not merely about refurbishing a physical structure but about safeguarding a shared heritage. “This Annex House represents more than bricks and mortar,” she said. “It embodies a legacy—our story, our meetings, our celebrations, and our unity as a people.”
‘Di bu Ugwu’: A Celebration of Womanhood and Culture
Egbunonu also highlighted the cultural significance of the newly inaugurated Di bu Ugwu dance troupe. She explained that the dance reflects the pride, dignity, and essence of Ihiala womanhood. It symbolizes respect for husbands, reverence for tradition, and the preservation of Igbo cultural expression. The colourful troupe, whose performances thrilled participants, is expected to serve as a cultural ambassador for the community in Lagos and beyond.

The President further commended the honourees recognized at the event—mothers and daughters whose “brilliance, resilience, and commitment continue to uplift the Ihiala community beyond borders.” She called for continued unity and dedication to ensure the successful completion of the ₦100 million renovation project.
Support from State Representatives and IPU Leadership
Representing the Anambra State Government, the Anambra State Liaison Officer in Lagos, Barr. Leo Chiegboka, expressed gratitude to the Ihiala community for their overwhelming support during the November 8 gubernatorial election. He praised the women for spearheading the renovation initiative and for promoting the community’s cultural heritage through the Di bu Ugwu troupe.

Similarly, the President of the Ihiala Progress Union (Lagos Branch), Mr. Steve Casmir Mbanugo, commended the Women’s Wing for taking bold steps toward community development. He urged all Ihiala indigenes across Lagos and beyond to support the project wholeheartedly, stressing that the renovation of the Annex House is a collective responsibility.
A Vibrant Celebration of Identity
The event reached its climax with the vibrant performances of the Di bu Ugwu cultural dancers, whose energetic displays drew loud cheers and admiration. Their performance not only added colour to the day but also reaffirmed the community’s enduring commitment to culture, unity, and progress.
