The Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association, NVMA, Anambra State Chapter, has called on the Anambra State Government to establish a standalone Ministry of Veterinary Services and Livestock Development to drive sustainable growth in the sector.
The association said the creation of the Ministry has become necessary to ensure focused planning, improved funding, effective policy implementation, innovation, and enhanced research.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the “Anambra Livestock Expo 2026” held at the Nnewi North Local Government Secretariat. The theme of the expo was “Ensuring and Sustaining the Availability of Animal Protein in the Diet of Our Local Communities.”
According to the communique signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Victor Ughaerumba, and Assistant Secretary, Dr. Favour Okwaraeke, the proposed Ministry will play a significant role in transforming the State’s economy.
The association said it has been engaging government officials on the need for the Ministry to boost livestock production and productivity, as well as strengthen surveillance and control of animal diseases.
NVMA noted that the current system places greater emphasis on crop production, with comparatively less attention given to livestock production, veterinary public health, disease control, and animal welfare.
Dr. Ughaerumba stressed that livestock production and disease control deserve stronger recognition because of their direct link to nutrition and food security. He, however, commended the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture.
He affirmed that establishing the new Ministry would be a landmark intervention by the State government to reshape the livestock sector, boost economic activities, and expand income opportunities for poultry farmers across the SQtate.
The association also expressed concern over the deplorable state of government veterinary clinics. It called for urgent renovation, adequate manpower, supply of essential drugs, diagnostic facilities, and improved operational support.
NVMA further urged the government to establish modern abattoirs equipped with standard facilities, cold chain systems, proper waste management infrastructure, and effective veterinary meat inspection services.
The body also appealed for the provision of operational vehicles to enhance the effective discharge of its professional responsibilities and public service mandate across the State.
“Operational vehicles will strengthen our capacity to support the government in promoting animal health, safeguarding public health, ensuring food safety, and improving livestock productivity,” the communique stated.

For too long, livestock has played second fiddle to crops in Anambra’s agricultural conversation. Yet every market day, our tables depend on poultry, fish, goats, and cattle for protein.
A dedicated Ministry of Veterinary Services and Livestock Development will do more than create another office. It will give farmers a direct line to government, improve disease surveillance, and make animal protein safer and more affordable.
If Governor Soludo answers this call, it will be a bold step toward food security, job creation, and a healthier Anambra. The livestock sector is ready. The structures must now follow.
