Another Year Of God’s Faithfulness
By Sylvia Tochukwu-Ngige
There are certain dates that live in a mother’s heart.
You don’t need a reminder on your phone. Your child will remind you. For days.
“Don’t forget August 3.”
“And I want that cake. The one with candies.”
That’s my son.
One of the things that still gives children pure, unfiltered joy is celebrating their birthdays. It’s not just about gifts. It’s about being seen. About cake. About the small rituals that tell them: you matter.
And this year, he deserves all of it.
He just finished his final exams and came out with excellent grades. He made us proud — not just with his brains, but with his discipline and the kind of character that makes a parent sleep well at night.
When I look at him now, I still see the tiny baby he was.
He came into the world very small, but very strong. I remember the comments: “Ah, this one came alone, unlike your other pregnancies. But he’s too tiny oh.”
People meant well. But I knew something they didn’t. That small body was carrying a big spirit.
Today, that spirit is loud and clear.
He has dreams. Big ones.
He says he wants to be a medical doctor. And then, with the confidence only a child can have, he adds: “When I grow up, I’ll build a house for you and daddy so you won’t suffer when you’re old.”
I laughed. Then I prayed.
I claim it.
As mothers, we carry our children’s dreams in our own hearts. We pray for their health, their wisdom, and the resources to help them become who God created them to be.
So today, we celebrate more than cake and candies.
We celebrate growth. We celebrate resilience. We celebrate the promise of a future we are nurturing one day at a time.
Happy birthday, my son, Nnaemeka.
May this new age bring you favour, wisdom, and everything your heart desires.
Mummy and Daddy are so proud of you. And we’re rooting for you — always.
With love from a Proud Mummy.
